GEO (AI visibility)

The work of being mentioned when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI answers.

Definition

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It describes the work of appearing in answers from AI assistants, in the same way SEO is about appearing in Google's results. You will also hear AEO, answer engine optimization. It is largely the same thing.

The difference from classic SEO is that there are no ten links to land among. The assistant writes an answer and perhaps names two or three brands. The ones named are often those others already write about: in reviews, on forums, in trade media and on Wikipedia. Your own site counts, but mostly when others point to it.

That is why AI visibility cannot be bought like an ad slot. What helps is clear pages that answer one question at a time, structured data and being mentioned in places the models read. Try it yourself: ask five questions your customers ask and see which names come up.
